My body knows
the struggle of
choosing to put its feet
into the Saucony
running shoes.
Its fingers hesitating
as they tie the laces.
With the final pull
and tightening of the shoes
my body knows it is
time to go.
Where will it run?
How far will it run?
The first steps are
life giving
and memory returns of
the push of
each heel as it leaves
the pavement.
Its lungs know the
agony
of pulling deep
breaths in
and exhaling forcibly
ensuring it does not
expire.
My body knows to keep
its head up.
That lamp post is not
at the top
of the hill
it is on the flat.
Perception is important.
A downhill section
lets the muscles loosen up
and prepare for the
next hill
or the long flat
stretch.
My body knows the
anguish of wondering
if it should slow the
steps
and simply walk.
Sometimes it must,
but that is not the
end
just a moment
in the experience
of running.
Legs bending.
Knees straining.
Lung and heart
pounding.
Brain considering life.
My body returns home.
It stretches, drinks,
eats, sleeps and prepares
for the next time.
