Turning off the light

There comes a time
at night
to turn off the light.
Sleep comes easier
in the dark.
A blending of
the external conditions
with our internal need.
A need to be dark,
empty,
for the cacophony
of our culture to
be silenced.
For muscles to relax.
For the beat of
our blood around
our body to slow
and the rhythm
of our breathing
to soften.
There must be a time
to switch off the light
and escape the tempest
of existance.
