Beginnings and endings

We shut down
at Christmas.
Closing our devices
(some of them)
and cutting off from responsibilities.
Entering a season
where time is banished,
meals merge
together
and much cheese
is consumed.
Clothing switches from
pyjamas
to dressing up
for special meals
and back again.
The shut down season
is occasionally interrupted
by forays to Tesco
for life essentials
or a walk in the park,
where the only other
walkers are dog owners
or parents of small
children needing
to try out new
wheeled gifts.
New Year
steals up on us,
disguised as another
celebration
then suddenly
flinging wide its doors
as we realise
that a whole new
year awaits us,
full of plans,
potentialities,
excitement
and dread,
brimming over with days
and weeks with new
months and seasons.
The sight of
a green shoot
in the garden
points in the direction
of living in a
ordered way once more,
having
emerged
from
the ending that is
Christmas.
