Invitation

On Monday evening "Glee" (E4) contained brilliant cover versions of Billy Joel's "Only the good die young", and "Losing my religion" by REM, alongside these songs were lots of fascinating conversations and interactions about belief, unbelief, and prayer.

Sue Sylvester, the cheerleader coach, described her experience of prayer as a child. She prayed and prayed for her sister, who had additional support needs, to be "normal". Her prayers never became reality, and she watched as people were cruel and unkind to the sister she adored. She came to believe that there was no God, no one was listening. As an adult, this pain and hurt as a child, had caused her to have deep suspicion of people who "pushed" their beliefs on others.

Near the end of the programme Sue is sitting with her sister playing draughts; as they play Sue asks her if she believes in God. Her sister says she does and offers to pray for Sue, who starts to weep and is profoundly touched by her sisters simple invitation to be part of her faith.

Arguments, discussion, debate may never have changed Sue's attitude to God, but the simple offer of a prayer, from someone she was in a close relationship with, touched her soul.
