Integrated Community project

The title of this blog does not reflect the life and vibrancy and hope that filled two East Kilbride Churches today!

Pupils from Our Lady of Lourdes, Mossneuk, and Canberra Primaries were welcomed warmly by Father Nolan and Rev Mackenzie in their respective churches.

In both buildings they listened, created, chatted, and built an "integrated community", in reality not just in theory.

There were two highlights of the day for me. Firstly hearing some P7 pupils from OLOL primary sharing about their baptism, first confession and communion, and their very recent confirmation. It was deeply moving to hear them share so confidently what these events had meant to them in their faith development, and how it had increased their sense of belonging in their worshipping community.

At the end of the day we all listened to "As we go now" by Fischy Music, as it played each pupil collected a wrist band with the words "No Divided City" embossed onto it. These wrist bands were lying under a cross draped in green and blue cloth. The words from the songs struck me forcibly as I watched each of these children, with so much ahead of them...

"As we go now from this moment
As we leave behind this time together
May we treasure one another
May we realise how precious we are"

They have the potential to change the history of our community, to bring understanding and connection, to create "a new future" as Theresa Breslin says in her book "Divided City". Each pupil today had already read this book as part of the project. That's what I am doing as soon as it arrives from amazon...
