There's been lots of chat this week about the church in the USA who were going to have a ceremonial burning of the Qur'an.
It seems such a far cry from the Jesus that the Christian Church follows, the Jesus who told a story of a beaten, bleeding man lying at the side of the road, his life hanging by a thread. The religious people of the day walked past, too busy, too religious, too clean, too distant to help. Along came a "despised" Samaritan, an enemy, a threat? He goes to the man, cleans his wounds, puts him on his donkey and pays for his stay in a hotel overnight, leaving enough money for his future care. Jesus said this was how we were to treat our neighbours.
Who is my neighbour? The person whose world view is different form mine? The reality is that the people who want to burn the Qur'an are merely a media catching extreme example of how far the Church often wanders from being the people Jesus calls us to be. That starts with me and my attitude. Thanks for the reminder Dove World Outreach Centre!
